Figaro

Those of you over on FB have already seen this, but Figaro passed away sometime during Friday night or early Saturday. When I went in to feed my birds Saturday morning, I found him dead. :( It looked like he'd collapsed forward from the perch he had usually been sleeping on, into his food dish. I want to think that this means he died peacefully in his sleep, though I'll never be able to be certain. Allen was with me when I found him. I picked him up out of the cage, and held his little body in my hands while I said my goodbye to him, and then just cried while Allen held me. I will bury him in my garden in the spring.

I adopted him just over 10 years ago. He was my second bird - my first was another lovebird named Tobi. He was at least a year old when I got him - he had the beak color of an adult lovebird. However, I expect he was older than that - I think he would have acted more like a baby bird still if he'd only been a year old when I brought him home. While there are a few people who have lovebirds at or near 20 years of age, the generally accepted lifespan ranges from 10-15 years. I expect he was pretty close to 15, if not a little older. He has been in a decline since about October, so his death wasn't unexpected. But it was still a surprise. He'd been fairly active when I'd had him out this last week, and then to have him just gone - I wasn't really ready for that. :(

I had been planning to go to Ikea on Saturday, to pick up some things for my kitchen and take a look at some ideas for maximizing usable space in small kitchens. After mulling it over, I decided to still go. Allen needed to do some work and I didn't want to just mope at home. Ikea was a good distraction from being sad. Once I got home though, I just wanted to sleep. So much for getting out of the house and doing anything fun.

Today, I was working on some things around the house. I'd picked up some storage jars at Ikea, and I put them in my sink to soak for a while. While I was in the basement changing out some laundry, I heard a drip, and looked up to see a drip coming down from the vicinity of where my new kitchen sink is. Craptastic! I went upstairs to look at it, and sure enough it was leaking steadily from the drain on the side without the disposal. I got a bucket underneath it and cleaned up the water, then called Rob, the handyman I'd had put it in. Fortunately he was able to come reset/reseal the drain, and hopefully that will do it. I left the bucket underneath for the time being, and when I do dishes will be checking it regularly. After Rob left, I went to meet up with Allen at his sister's house. His sister, L, just got a 10 week old puppy. They think he's a lab/retriever mix. He is little and fluffy and so adorable. I had fun playing with him, and I had fun watching Allen play with him - he is good with all animals, but especially with dogs.

Meeting the puppy had the flip side though of making me think more about Figaro. Imagining what he would have been like as a little baby bird, thinking about my first few years with him and Tobi. He was a timid, shy bird, but sporadically would be really affectionate. He got more affectionate as he declined, often letting me cuddle him and pet his head. I want to find a rock to mark where I bury him, and I am going to ask my friend Annmarie if she'd be willing to paint a little lovebird on it. I'm also thinking about planting some black eyed susans there, as the yellow and browns against the green leaves will remind me of him.
