Sweet Sad Story
Oct. 30th, 2004 05:44 pmI was out door knocking/canvassing for Kerry/Edwards today in Minneapolis. When you're canvassing, you're supposed to go knock on the door of every single house, regardless of what kind of political signs they have in their yard. They tell you not to make any assumptions about the political leanings of the person who opens the door based on the signs, because they could represent the views of the person's landlord, spouse, housemate, etc. Minneapolis is pretty hard-core Democratic, so it's not that often that you have to knock on a door with a Bush/Cheney sign, but when it happens it's pretty cringe inducing.
So one of the people I was canvassing with today did get a house with a Bush/Cheney sign and a little old lady answered the door. It turned out that she is a Democrat and supports Kerry. But her husband, who died last month, had been a strong Bush supporter. She said that even though she can't stand Bush, she just couldn't bear to take the sign down because it was a reminder of her husband's presence.
