Dinner

I had my sister, brother-in-law and nieces over for dinner tonight. My mom decided to drive up from Madison for part of the weekend to go see (and possibly counter protesters at) a performance of the Vagina Monologues at the College of Saint Catherine.

For dinner, notable things I made include a squash soup that I am fond of (but hadn't had a chance to make yet this winter) and salmon with a lemon-ginger-soy sauce marinade. I'm not sure how my squash soup went over - it's different from most soups in that it is fairly sweet and I think that might have weirded everyone else out a little bit. (My nieces definitely didn't like it). The salmon went over well though. It's a marinade that I once saw one of Chiara's friends make when I was out for a visit, and it's stuck in my memory as one of the best ways I have ever had salmon done. So I struck on to imitate it. I think it could have used a little more lemon zest, but it was definitely good.

For dessert I made a recipe that robbbbbb posted in his livejournal. The recipe made way more mocha sauce than I could possibly use without resorting to drinking it, but the end result was still fantastic.

And now, a funny story.

After dinner I sat around in the living room chatting with my mom, sister, and brother-in-law while Molly and Kiera played with some puzzles on the floor. After I had cleared away the dinner dishes and had whipped the cream, I told my sister the d-e-s-s-e-r-t was ready, spelling it out instead of just saying it so as not to tip off my nieces if my sister wanted to wait longer before having it. But, my younger niece Kiera immediately stopped what she was doing and went over to the table while Molly followed me into the kitchen asking what was for dessert. So much for subtlety.
