My Weekend
May. 7th, 2006 10:00 pmThis was one of those weekends that was so fantastic it's hard to believe it's not actually technically over yet. The weather has been beautiful - high 60's and sunny - all weekend. And quite a bit of my weekend was spent outside.
Friday night I had Shabbat dinner with the Indie Jews - a group of mostly unaffiliated, hip liberal Jews. I got to catch up with my friend Jen, who I hadn't seen in several years, and meet a bunch of new people. I'm looking forward to going to events with them in the future, and might even volunteer to host one of the monthly Shabbat dinners.
Saturday, I went out to Hastings with my friend Joanna to go to The Raptor Center of Minnesota's spring raptor release day. They released four birds that have been rehabbed back into good enough shape to return to the wild. They also had a bunch of their education birds out there. The education birds all have injuries or other traits that make them unable to survive in the wild. They're brought into contact with the public, ostensibly to teach people about raptors. Also, it's really neat to see raptors up close and letting people get 3 feet from a bald eagle with nothing in between them but a tether on the eagle's leg will make people more amenable to giving the raptor center money. :) I have pictures up on flickr for this, so there's much more about it after the cut.
Saturday night was a games night hosted by
soundingsea and
ironchefjoe. I played Plague and Pestilence, which I did not win despite an early prediction that I would. Then I played Scrabble and won in a landslide. I got a 36 point word early in the game and was able to maintain my lead to finish it out.
Today was the annual Mayday parade put on by Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater. Despite the fact that this is one of my favorite events of the year in Minneapolis, I've managed to miss it the past two years running. Oftentimes the weather is pretty bad for it; last year it actually snowed. But this year the weather was amazing. It was barely even windy. I'll post more about the parade once I have my pictures from it uploaded to flickr.
In the meantime ( birds all over your screen! )
