It's Perfect
Jul. 1st, 2006 10:52 pmMy sister brought my nieces, Molly and Kiera, over to see my house yesterday. They both wanted to go up to the attic and down into the basement. Molly asked me if she could see the room that has wallpaper. (One of the bedrooms has wallpaper - fortunately it's the only place in the house that has any). The wallpaper is an antiquated blue flower pattern. I'm pretty sure that either a) I had a mattress at some point during my childhood with an identical pattern, b) there's wallpaper just like it in my grandmother's house, or c) both of the above. I took Molly into the room explaining that I was planning to take it down. As soon as she got into the room she ran over to the wall and touched the wallpaper, really looking at it. Then she turned to me and said, "but Aunt Abi, it's perfect!" I couldn't help but laugh when she said that, but she was being sincere. I suppose I loved room with crazy wallpaper embellishments when I was 5 too.
Yesterday evening, and all day this morning I worked on prepping the walls and painting them with my brother and sister-in-law. We made really good progress! Yesterday my brother took down all the hardware from the drapes, Melissa spackled the nail holes, and I sanded the spots that I'd mudded. Today we primed the mudded spots, finished taping around the baseboard, windows, doors, etc, and draped the floors and woodwork with dropcloths. Then we painted! We got two coats on the dining room, and one on the living room. Tomorrow we'll put a second coat on the living room, and then we'll either paint the hallway or start working on getting the wallpaper down. The paint was previously "Spanish Peach", an orangey-pink color. Now, it's "Swiss Coffee", an off-white that's very slightly warm brown. I didn't realize until I'd gotten all the walls white that part of why I didn't like the peach color is that it just made me kind of frenetic. White rooms feel bright, open, and relaxed to me. My floors have been done, so once we take up all of the tape and dropcloths, my living room and dining room will be perfect. We wound up today's painting at about 6:45, and then went home and all took showers. Then I ordered some pizzas from Punch for takeout, and took Nate and Melissa to the liquor store to have them pick out beer. :) They so deserved both.
