A week or two ago I noticed that something had been digging holes in my yard. My first guess was chipmunks, though [livejournal.com profile] rgeorge suggested they might be some teeny, tiny variety of gopher that's native to Minnesota. (The striped ground squirrel, technically, the pictures of which look indistinguishable from chipmunks to me). I began keeping my eye out for chipmunks, but didn't spot any. Yesterday, I went out in the evening to pick up a rooftop luggage box from my sister and deliver it to someone it's being lent to. When I was walking back into my house, I noticed something move away quickly into the grass. I tried to get a closer look, but it was too dark to really tell what it was. It definitely wasn't a chipmunk, though. I revised my opinion to either moles or some sort of hole digging mice.

I went out with some friends this evening, and this time I remembered to flip on my outside light on my way out. As I was pulling back up to my house, I saw something small moving on my walk. I got out of my car and went to investigate. With the outside light on, I could clearly see what it was. And boy had my theory been wrong. )
