New Year's

I know I'm belated, but I wanted to wish everyone reading this a happy new year!

It's been my second 4 day weekend in a row, so I'm in denial that I'll have to go back to work on Monday and won't get any days off until I take some vacation days, which probably won't be until April. On the other hand, for the first time since my first year out of college, I didn't spending New Year's sad that I wasn't with college friends. I got to leave work early, so I went home and napped until Rogers called me to wake me up. We stopped by a party hosted by [livejournal.com profile] purplecamels and her roommate. I really only knew purplecamels and her boyfriend, [livejournal.com profile] albiziaman, so I chatted with them for a bit while Rogers communed with the apartment cat. He was in the midst of getting a cold, so was all dopey on drowsy cold medicine. I was worried he was going to fall asleep curled up with the cat, so we hopped to party #2, hosted by Logan (who I've barely met). There were lots of people I knew there, and I would have been content to hang out there for a while, save for the smoke. Since Rogers was sick, we didn't spend very long there before we hopped to party #3 (the final party of the evening), hosted by our game night friends, Bridget and Joe. There was a group of people who had already started playing "History of the World", which looked like an excessively complicated version of Risk. There were also a bunch of people playing Mario Car Double Dash, which looked like less of an intellectual challenge for our sleep-deprived, cold medicine hopped up minds. I only played for a little while -- car based video games actually make me feel sick to my stomach if I play them for any length of time -- but it was funny to watch. Midnight rolled around and we could see the top half of the downtown Minneapolis fireworks display through the window. Rogers and I smooched, had a few sips of champagne, then went home to go to bed.

Waking up Thursday morning it turned out that Rogers was really pretty sick. I went and picked up some Orange Juice, cold medicine, and chicken soup for him. Then I left him attached to his pillow while I headed off to hang out with my family. My mom has a New Year's day superstition that involves eating black eyed peas. She will attribute any bit of bad luck during the year (including accidents, injuries, and financial and social woes) to not having eaten enough black eyed peas on New Year's day. I'm not really sure whether this superstition comes from her Southern heritage, or something totally unrelated. I know other people have this superstition, but it manifests itself differently. More on that in a bit.

Anyhow, I was hanging out at my mom's house when [livejournal.com profile] pants_of_doom called me to tell me that she was at the Spy House, a local coffee shop, with none other than Rob and Anna Prestezog! I decided to punt hanging out with my family until later, and went over to the Spy House to hang out with them for a couple of hours. We spent a little bit more time at the Spy house, then went to the Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden to see the Cherry Spoon Bridge. While talking I found out that Anna's family also has a New Year's day superstition about black eyed peas. With her family though, it's not that you'll be unlucky if you don't eat black eyed peas, but you'll have a day of good luck for each black eyed pea that you eat. After the sculpture garden we went to [livejournal.com profile] pants_of_doom's apartment. Soon after we got there, my parents called to tell me that dinner was just about ready, so I bid Penny and the Prestezog's adieu and headed back to my mom's house. My mom prepared the black eyed peas with a new recipe this year -- she cooked them with rice, onions, and turmeric, which was actually pretty good. She made enough for a small village though, so I think I'll be eating them for a few more days yet.

Today Rogers and I went on a search for Glofish. We looked at Petsmart and Petco. Neither had them, and neither knew if/when they'd be getting them. Has anyone else local gone looking for them? If so, any luck?

I hope you have all had a good holiday season and NYE!
