Tweeting the old-fashioned way can net you a steep discount on a fine feathered pet.

The Animal Humane Society says its five Minnesota locations have an overabundance of birds. It says many of the 279 birds are the result of voluntary surrenders.

To encourage people to adopt one the group is offering a promotion — tweet your best bird call or sing or whistle a few lines of a bird-themed song and you can adopt a bird for $1.

Officials say most of the cockatiels, parakeets and finches were being properly cared for but the owners could no longer handle them. Workers have examined the birds, tested them for disease and prepared them for adoption.

The promotion applies at the group's locations in Buffalo, Coon Rapids, Golden Valley, St. Paul, and Woodbury.

279 birds! It looks like less than half of them are listed on the website. If you've ever considered getting a pet bird, please adopt.

Wow! That's a lot of birds.

I've never had a bird. I wouldn't even know what to do with one (other than keep it away from my dog). I hope that they find homes, though.

Oh, woah...
I was just at the Golden Valley AHS last night, because my parents live so close to there, I was going to dinner, I wanted some catty cuddles beforehand... There is a beautiful grey cockatiel there, he was a bit mean, but the girl who came in to give them water said that they were stressed from just being moved upstairs to the public area, and besides were not well handled because they had all come from a single room with WAY to many birds in it. I have kinda wanted a bird for a long while, but I don't think my boy would be down with that... I'm working on convincing him of a rabbit I want to get, changing my tune in the midst may derail my efforts.
I am s glad I didn't know of this last night. :3

!!!

Wonder if they'll still be around by next week, payday. Could make a day of it, looking for the birdcage and all.

Per their website it's for the next few days, so I'm not sure. I don't want to discourage you from getting a bird, but since you posted about being on a very fixed income, please carefully consider whether you can take on the expense of a bird before you adopt one. I spend about $60/month on food for my three birds. I'm buying premium food, and could get something cheaper that would be alright, but it's still an expense you should factor in.

Indeed. I've been thinking through the whole thing. I'd be picking up cage, supplies, etc, as well as replacing all my Teflon cookware. It's just that, given the price and given that bird ownership is a goal of mine, I at least had to think about it a bit.
